Why Rent in Gilgit
The Gateway to Northern Pakistan
Gilgit is the air hub and administrative capital of Gilgit-Baltistan — the starting point for almost every Northern Pakistan adventure. Most international travelers fly into Gilgit Airport (more frequent flights than Skardu) and rent a vehicle to access Hunza, Khunjerab Pass, Fairy Meadows, Naltar Valley, and Skardu. Without a private rental, exploring these regions is essentially impossible — there's no Uber, no Careem, no functional public bus network, and no self-drive option anywhere in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Five Reasons to Rent in Gilgit
Gilgit's unique position as Northern Pakistan's air hub makes it the smartest starting point for any Karakoram adventure.
2-3 Hours to Karimabad on the Karakoram Highway
Hunza Valley is just 2-3 hours from Gilgit along the world-famous Karakoram Highway. Karimabad (the main town in Hunza) sits at 2,438m and offers Baltit Fort, Altit Fort, Eagle's Nest viewpoint with views of five 7,000m+ peaks (Rakaposhi 7,788m, Diran 7,266m, Golden Peak 7,027m, Ladyfinger 6,000m, Ultar Sar 7,388m), and the Hunza Ismaili Muslim culture. Most Gilgit rentals are used primarily for Hunza exploration. Our Prado handles the route effortlessly — paved throughout.
The World's Highest Paved International Road
Khunjerab Pass at 4,693m is the Pakistan-China border crossing — the highest paved international border in the world. The pass is approximately 5-6 hours from Gilgit via Karimabad, Attabad Lake, and Sost. The Khunjerab National Park houses snow leopards, Marco Polo sheep, and Himalayan ibex. The pass is open May through November (snowbound the rest of the year). Our 4x4 rentals are specifically tuned for the high-altitude drive to Khunjerab.
Iconic Nanga Parbat Base Camp Views
Fairy Meadows offers some of the most iconic Nanga Parbat (8,126m, world's 9th highest peak) views on earth. The route from Gilgit: 3 hours by paved road to Raikot Bridge, then a mandatory 1-hour specialized jeep ride up an extremely steep mountain track, followed by a 2-3 hour trek to reach the meadows themselves. We coordinate the specialized Raikot jeeps as part of our Fairy Meadows rentals. Best visited May-October. One of Pakistan's most rewarding adventure trips.
Pakistan's Most Stunning Alpine Lakes
Naltar Valley is approximately 2.5 hours northwest of Gilgit and home to three of Pakistan's most photographed alpine lakes — the Naltar Lakes. The colors range from emerald green to deep turquoise depending on the season. The valley sits at 2,900m surrounded by pine forests, ski slopes (Pakistan's premier skiing in winter), and traditional Wakhi villages. The road requires a 4x4 for the upper lake section. Often overlooked in favor of Hunza but equally spectacular.
Northern Pakistan Drivers Who Know Every Road
Our drivers aren't subcontracted from Lahore or Islamabad. They're from Gilgit, Hunza, and surrounding valleys — and they've driven the Karakoram Highway since they were teenagers. They know which mountain section has the best Rakaposhi photograph, which roadside dhaba serves authentic Hunza apricot soup, which villages welcome unannounced visitors, and the entire story of every fort, lake, and mountain pass. They speak Burushaski (Hunza), Shina (Gilgit), Urdu, and English. International tourists consistently rate our drivers as the unexpected highlight of their trip.
Most travelers think of Gilgit as just a transit stop — somewhere you fly into before heading to Hunza. They miss the point entirely. Gilgit is the heart of the Karakoram, the meeting of three mountain ranges, and the gateway to every adventure in the north. From Gilgit you can reach Hunza in three hours, Fairy Meadows in a day, Khunjerab Pass at the Chinese border in six. The Karakoram Highway begins here. Anyone who rents a vehicle in Gilgit and takes the time to explore properly discovers that the journey from Gilgit is the real story.

Destinations
Where Your Gilgit Rental Can Take You
From 30-minute city visits to multi-day Karakoram Highway expeditions, your Gilgit rental opens up the entire northern Pakistan region. Here are every major destination your vehicle can reach, with realistic drive times, distances, recommended vehicles, and what each route delivers.
Gilgit City
Gilgit city itself offers Gilgit Bazaar for traditional Northern Pakistan shopping, the historic suspension bridges over the Gilgit River, Chinar Bagh (a beautiful riverside garden), the Kargah Buddha (a 7th-century rock carving), Gilgit Airport, and the famous polo grounds (Northern Pakistan's most beloved sport). A perfect day-one orientation drive for any rental.
Kargah Buddha
The Kargah Buddha is a 7th-century rock-carved standing Buddha on a cliff face — one of the most important Buddhist heritage sites in Northern Pakistan. Approximately 3 meters tall, it dates to the early Silk Road era when Gilgit was a major Buddhist center. The site also includes the Kargah Nala monastery ruins. A short, easy day trip from Gilgit city. Paved road throughout.
Naltar Valley & Naltar Lakes
Naltar Valley sits at 2,900m northwest of Gilgit and houses three of Pakistan's most photographed alpine lakes — the famous Naltar Lakes. The colors shift from emerald green to deep turquoise depending on the season. The valley is surrounded by pine forests and is home to Pakistan's premier ski resort. The upper lake section requires a 4x4. Famous for the Wakhi villages and traditional Northern Pakistan culture.
Karimabad (Hunza)
Karimabad is the cultural heart of Hunza Valley — 2-3 hours from Gilgit along the Karakoram Highway. Visit Baltit Fort (700+ years old), Altit Fort (1,100+ years old), Eagle's Nest viewpoint, and the iconic Rakaposhi viewpoint (7,788m). Home to the Ismaili Muslim community led by the Aga Khan. The road is paved throughout, suitable for any vehicle. Most travelers stay 2-3 nights in Karimabad.
Attabad Lake (Upper Hunza)
Attabad Lake is the world-famous turquoise lake formed in 2010 after a landslide blocked the Hunza River. The Karakoram Highway now passes through five tunnels around the lake — one of the most photographed sections of the entire KKH. Boat rides, lakeside restaurants, and dramatic photography opportunities. Often combined with Passu Cones as a full day trip from Hunza or Gilgit.
Passu Cones & Hussaini Bridge
Passu Cones (also called Tupopdan, 6,106m) are the iconic jagged cathedral-like peaks featured on countless Pakistan tourism posters. Located in Upper Hunza near Passu village. The Hussaini Bridge — one of the world's most dangerous suspension bridges over the Hunza River — is just minutes away. Both are absolute must-see Pakistan landmarks. Paved road throughout via KKH.
Khunjerab Pass (Pakistan-China Border)
Khunjerab Pass at 4,693m is the world's highest paved international border crossing — the Pakistan-China border. The Khunjerab National Park houses snow leopards, Marco Polo sheep, ibex, and the Himalayan brown bear. Open May through November (snowbound rest of year). The high altitude makes a reliable 4x4 essential. Most travelers do this as a 2-day trip with overnight at Sost or Passu. Park entry fee $8/person.
Fairy Meadows & Nanga Parbat
Fairy Meadows offers iconic views of Nanga Parbat (8,126m, world's 9th highest peak). The journey: 3 hours by paved road to Raikot Bridge from Gilgit, then a mandatory 1-hour specialized jeep ride up one of the world's most dangerous mountain tracks, followed by a 2-3 hour trek. We coordinate the specialized Raikot jeeps. Best visited May-October. The Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek extends this into a 4-5 day adventure.
Bagrot Valley
Bagrot Valley is the off-the-beaten-path alternative just east of Gilgit. Most international tourists never reach here. Traditional Shina-speaking villages, glacial streams, pine forests, and views of Rakaposhi from a different angle. The route requires a 4x4 due to unpaved sections. Excellent for travelers seeking authentic Northern Pakistan culture without the tourism crowds.
Nagar Valley & Hopper Glacier
Nagar Valley sits directly across the Hunza River from Hunza Valley — separated by the river but a completely different cultural region (Shia Muslim culture vs Hunza's Ismaili). Famous for Hopper Glacier (one of the world's largest valley glaciers), Rakaposhi Base Camp viewpoint, and traditional Nagar villages. The road follows the Karakoram Highway then branches off. Some sections unpaved.
Gilgit to Skardu
Skardu is the gateway to Deosai Plains, Khaplu Palace, and the K2 region — 3 hours east of Gilgit. The drive follows the dramatic Indus gorge with multiple photography stops. The Karakoram Highway is mostly paved throughout. Excellent option as a one-way transfer if you're combining Hunza and Skardu in a single trip. Most travelers do Gilgit → Hunza → Gilgit → Skardu in a 10-12 day loop.
Astore Valley
Astore Valley sits at the foot of Nanga Parbat (8,126m). The valley is famous for Rama Meadow, Rama Lake (trout-filled alpine lake), and the dramatic Burzil Pass. Astore is the lesser-known cousin to Hunza — equally spectacular but with a fraction of the tourists. Some sections involve high-altitude mountain passes — 4x4 essential. Best visited May-October.
Phander Valley & Phander Lake
Phander Valley is one of Northern Pakistan's hidden gems — in Ghizer District west of Gilgit. The famous Phander Lake reflects pine forests and mountains in deep blue water. Often called "Little Kashmir" for its serene beauty. Best for travelers wanting a quieter alternative to Hunza. The drive crosses Gakuch and follows the Gilgit River. Some unpaved sections require 4x4.
Gilgit to Islamabad
Gilgit to Islamabad by road is a 2-day journey via the Karakoram Highway through Chilas and Besham. Most travelers fly between the two cities (1-hour flight), but the road journey itself is spectacular — passing Nanga Parbat viewpoint, the Indus gorge, and dramatic mountain landscapes. Recommended only when domestic flights are disrupted by weather, or for travelers wanting the full Karakoram Highway experience.

Plan My Gilgit ItineraryWhy Driver-Included?
Every Rental Comes With a Professional Driver
This is the #1 question foreign tourists ask: "Can I rent without a driver?" The honest answer is no, and that's actually a good thing. Here's why driver-included rentals are the only practical and safest way to explore Northern Pakistan.
The Direct Answer
Self-drive rentals are NOT available in Gilgit or anywhere in Gilgit-Baltistan. This isn't a policy of our company specifically — it's a regional reality. No rental company in Gilgit offers self-drive. The reasons are practical, safety-related, and ultimately to your benefit as a traveler.
Four Reasons Driver-Included Is Better
Beyond regulatory requirements, having a local driver fundamentally improves your Northern Pakistan experience.
Karakoram Highway Requires Local Knowledge
The Karakoram Highway is one of the world's most spectacular but also most challenging roads. Narrow mountain passes, occasional landslides during monsoon, single-lane bridges, and dramatic switchbacks define the route. Conditions change with weather, season, and recent geological events. Our drivers know which sections require careful navigation, which detours save hours, and which mountain passes are open today.
GPS Doesn't Work Reliably in the Mountains
Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze all have spotty coverage in Northern Pakistan's deep mountain valleys. Cell signal is absent or weak in many areas — especially between Gilgit and Khunjerab, or in remote valleys like Naltar and Bagrot. Self-driving travelers regularly get lost, miss turnoffs, or end up on dangerous unmarked tracks. Our drivers have driven every road in the region hundreds of times.
Driver Acts as Informal Guide
Our drivers are from Gilgit, Hunza, and surrounding valleys — they know which roadside dhaba (small restaurant) makes the best Hunza apricot soup, where to stop for the best Rakaposhi photograph at sunset, which villages welcome unannounced visitors for tea, and the stories behind every major site. International tourists consistently rate this informal cultural guidance as the unexpected highlight of their trip.
Insurance Complications for Foreign Drivers
Pakistani insurance policies for rental vehicles typically don't cover non-resident foreign drivers, especially in mountain regions. If anything goes wrong — a fender bender, a breakdown, an unfortunate incident — foreign self-drivers face significant liability and legal complications. With our drivers, all insurance and legal protections are fully in place. Your only responsibility as a passenger is to enjoy the journey.
Who Are Our Drivers?
Every driver we work with meets the following qualifications. We don't subcontract to outside companies — these are local Northern Pakistan professionals we've worked with for years.
Government Licensed
Valid Pakistani commercial driving license, verified by Gilgit-Baltistan Transport Authority. We keep copies on file for every driver in our fleet.
Local Northern Pakistanis
All our drivers were born and raised in Gilgit-Baltistan (Gilgit, Hunza, Nagar, or surrounding villages). They speak Burushaski, Shina, Urdu, and basic to fluent English.
English-Speaking on Request
If you specifically need an English-speaking driver (recommended for non-Urdu speakers), let us know during booking. We assign our most fluent drivers to international clients.
Minimum 5 Years Experience
Every driver on our roster has at least 5 years of professional driving experience on the Karakoram Highway. Many have 10+ years including tour groups and expedition support.
Vehicle Mechanical Knowledge
Our drivers can perform basic mechanical fixes (changing tires, jump-starts, minor adjustments). For anything serious, our 24/7 support team dispatches a replacement vehicle or mechanic within 4-6 hours.
Cultural & Safety Briefed
All drivers complete cultural sensitivity training and safety protocols specific to international tourists. They know what foreign visitors need (rest stops, photo opportunities, etiquette guidance).
Driver Working Hours & Etiquette
Drivers work approximately 8-10 hours per day including driving time, rest stops, and waiting at sites. Extended days (15+ hours) require driver consent and may include overtime charges.
Drivers take rest stops every 2-3 hours of driving for safety reasons. These naturally align with photography stops, meal breaks, and viewpoint visits — meaning rest stops benefit your itinerary, not just the driver.
Driver meals outside Gilgit are your responsibility (approximately PKR 1,500-2,500 / $5-8 USD per day). Inside Gilgit, drivers handle their own meals. Many travelers eat together with their driver — a great way to learn about Northern Pakistan culture.
Tipping is optional but appreciated for excellent service. Standard tip range is PKR 1,500-3,000 ($5-10 USD) per day for good service, paid in cash at the end of the trip. For multi-day excellent service, travelers often tip PKR 5,000-10,000 ($15-35 USD) total.

Customer Reviews
What Our Renters Say
Real feedback from international travelers who've rented our vehicles. Specific dates, specific trips, specific stories. We don't post anonymous reviews — every testimonial is from a real customer who agreed to be quoted.
"We rented a Prado for 6 days in September 2024 from Gilgit to drive the Karakoram Highway all the way to Khunjerab Pass. Our driver Mr. Karim was incredible — he knew every viewpoint, the best places to photograph Rakaposhi at sunset, and where to find authentic Hunza apricot soup. The vehicle handled the high-altitude drive flawlessly. Best rental experience of any of our Asia trips."
"Booked a Jeep for the Fairy Meadows trip from Gilgit. The team coordinated the specialized Raikot Bridge jeep transfer — something I would have struggled to arrange independently. The Nanga Parbat views from Fairy Meadows were beyond anything I expected. The vehicle, driver, and logistics were all perfect. Will book again for our Pakistan return trip."
"Our group of 10 needed a Hiace for 8 days to do Gilgit, Hunza, Attabad, Passu, and Naltar. The booking was simple — sent itinerary via WhatsApp and had a quote in under 2 hours. The driver was patient with our endless photography stops on the KKH. No hidden costs, exactly as quoted. The Vacation Project handled everything professionally."
"As a solo female traveler, I was nervous about renting a vehicle in Northern Pakistan. The Vacation Project's team was professional, communicative, and made me feel safe throughout. We did Gilgit → Karimabad → Khunjerab → Skardu over 10 days in a Land Cruiser Prado. Our driver was from Hunza and his cultural knowledge added so much to the trip."

Frequently Asked Questions
Gilgit Rent a Car FAQ
Honest answers to the 80+ questions international travelers ask us about renting a car in Gilgit. Based on nine years of operations and 200+ international client trips along the Karakoram Highway.
Renting Basics
No. Self-drive rentals are not available in Gilgit or anywhere in Gilgit-Baltistan. Every rental comes with a professional local driver. This isn't a company policy — it's a regional reality due to Karakoram Highway safety requirements, GPS coverage gaps, and insurance regulations for non-resident drivers.
Our Toyota Corolla / Honda City Sedan starts at $40/day, making it the most affordable option for paved-road destinations like Karimabad, Attabad Lake, and Kargah Buddha. Note: fuel is not included in the daily rate. For complete budget options, contact us with your itinerary.
For the main Karakoram Highway routes (Gilgit to Karimabad, Attabad, Passu) any vehicle works since the road is paved. A 4x4 (Prado, Land Cruiser, 4Runner, or Jeep) becomes essential for Khunjerab Pass (high altitude), Fairy Meadows (mandatory specialized jeep section), Naltar Valley upper sections, and Bagrot Valley.
Yes. We rent to foreign tourists from all nationalities. All rentals include a professional Pakistani driver, so no international driver's license is needed. You just need a valid passport and Pakistan e-visa. Most of our clients are international visitors from the US, UK, Europe, Australia, and Asia.
You need a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity, and a Pakistan e-visa (apply online via NADRA, ~$60 USD, 7-15 days processing). You do NOT need an international driver's license since our drivers are included. Travel insurance is highly recommended but not strictly required.
Yes. We offer Gilgit Airport pickup as a standard service. Your driver meets you at arrivals with a "Welcome [Your Name]" sign. Airport pickup is included free with multi-day rentals (3+ days). For single-day rentals, airport pickup costs $30 extra. We coordinate to match your flight schedule.
Yes. Both Gilgit Airport pickup and drop-off are offered. For rentals of 3+ days, both are typically included free. For shorter rentals, the service costs $30 each way. We can also coordinate hotel pickup and drop-off if your flight times don't align with airport service.
Pricing & Payment
Our Toyota Land Cruiser Prado TX rents for $50/day, and the premium Prado TZ also rents for $50/day. Both include the vehicle, professional local driver, vehicle maintenance, and basic insurance. Fuel is not included — typically $30-50/day depending on your route along the Karakoram Highway. The Prado is our most popular vehicle for international clients.
Our Toyota Land Cruiser V8 (luxury) rents for $120/day. This is our premium luxury vehicle with V8 engine, leather seating, premium sound system, and climate control. Best for VIP travelers, executive trips, and travelers who want maximum comfort on long Karakoram Highway drives. Fuel is not included.
Our Toyota Corolla or Honda City Sedan rents for $40/day — the most affordable vehicle in our fleet. Best for paved-road destinations like Gilgit city, Karimabad, Attabad, and Passu. Includes driver and basic insurance. Fuel not included (~$20-30/day for sedan routes).
No, fuel is not included in our standard daily rates. We do this to keep pricing transparent — fuel cost varies dramatically based on your route (Khunjerab uses far more fuel than Gilgit city) and vehicle type. If you'd prefer an all-inclusive quote, share your itinerary and we'll send a fuel-inclusive price within 2 hours.
We accept international payment methods: international wire transfer, PayPal, Wise/Transferwise, and Western Union. A 30% deposit confirms your booking. The remaining 70% is paid in cash (USD or PKR) or local bank transfer when you meet your driver in Gilgit.

Yes. Extensions are accommodated subject to vehicle availability. Contact your driver or our operations team to request an extension. Same daily rate applies to extension days. We recommend extending early during peak season (June-October) as vehicles fill up quickly. Multi-day discounts may apply to extended rentals.
Vehicles & Drivers
Yes. All vehicles include comprehensive insurance covering vehicle damage, theft, and third-party liability. Passenger medical coverage is also included for the duration of your rental. You do not need to purchase additional insurance unless you want extra coverage beyond what we provide.
Mechanical issues are rare but possible on long Karakoram Highway journeys. Our protocol: your driver immediately contacts our 24/7 operations team. We dispatch a replacement vehicle from Gilgit, typically within 4-6 hours. All costs covered by us — you're never stranded or charged extra. For severe situations, we coordinate alternative transport including helicopter rescue if medically needed.
Tipping is optional but appreciated for excellent service. Standard tip range is PKR 1,500-3,000 ($5-10 USD) per day for good service. For multi-day excellent service, travelers often tip PKR 5,000-10,000 ($15-35 USD) total at the end of the trip. Tips are paid directly to your driver in cash.
Yes, English-speaking drivers are available on request. All our drivers speak basic English (sufficient for travel coordination), and several speak fluent English. If you need a fluent English-speaking driver, specify this during booking and we'll assign our most fluent driver to your trip. All drivers also speak Burushaski, Shina, and Urdu.
Yes. If you've worked with one of our drivers before or received a recommendation, you can request them by name. We accommodate driver requests subject to availability. New clients can specify preferences (English fluency, age, experience level) and we'll match accordingly.
Both rent at $50/day with similar 4x4 capability. The Prado TZ is the premium variant with leather seating, sunroof, enhanced sound system, and more luxurious interior finishes. The Prado TX has cloth seats but identical mechanical capability. For couples or business travelers wanting premium comfort, choose TZ. For families wanting capability without extra luxury, choose TX.
Yes, with experienced drivers. The Karakoram Highway is well-maintained and patrolled by Pakistani authorities. Our drivers know every section thoroughly. Real risks are limited to occasional weather-related delays and monsoon landslides (August). Crime is virtually zero in Gilgit-Baltistan. Our 9-year safety record includes 200+ international clients with zero major incidents.
Winter rentals are available (November-March) with 30-40% off our standard rates. However, many routes are closed: Khunjerab Pass, Fairy Meadows, Naltar upper sections, and Astore are inaccessible. Gilgit city, Karimabad (Hunza), and Naltar lower sections (for skiing) remain accessible. 4x4 with snow chains is essential.
Vehicle Recommendations by Destination
Yes. The drive from Gilgit to Khunjerab Pass (4,693m) takes 5-6 hours via Karimabad, Attabad Lake, and Sost. The road is paved throughout but the high altitude makes a reliable 4x4 strongly recommended. Khunjerab is open May through November. Most travelers do this as a 2-day trip with overnight at Sost or Passu.
Partially. Our Prado or 4x4 can drive from Gilgit to Raikot Bridge (3 hours, paved road). From Raikot Bridge, a specialized local jeep is mandatory for the 1-hour drive up to Tato village — no other vehicles permitted on this notoriously dangerous mountain track. From Tato, it's a 2-3 hour trek to Fairy Meadows. We coordinate the entire logistics chain.
4x4 required: Naltar Valley upper sections, Bagrot Valley, Astore Valley, Fairy Meadows (specialized Raikot jeep mandatory), Khunjerab Pass (recommended due to altitude). 4x4 not required: Karimabad, Attabad Lake, Passu, Hussaini Bridge, Kargah Buddha, Gilgit city — all paved Karakoram Highway routes.
Technically yes — the road is paved — but we strongly recommend a Prado or 4Runner for Khunjerab. The 4,693m altitude affects engine performance in sedans, and the long drive (5-6 hours each way) is more comfortable in a 4x4 with better suspension. Plus 4x4 provides safety margin if weather changes suddenly at the pass.
For couples or small families: Toyota Corolla Sedan ($40/day) or Toyota Prado TX ($50/day). The Karakoram Highway from Gilgit to Karimabad is paved throughout, so any vehicle works. Most travelers prefer the Prado for better comfort on the 2-3 hour drive and the option to extend to Khunjerab Pass.
The 3-hour Gilgit to Skardu road is mostly paved Karakoram Highway. Any vehicle works mechanically. For comfort: Toyota Prado or Land Cruiser V8. For groups: Toyota Hiace (10-14 passengers) or Grand Cabin. Choice depends on group size and comfort priorities.
From Gilgit to Raikot Bridge: any vehicle works (paved road). From Raikot Bridge to Tato village: only the specialized Raikot Bridge jeeps are permitted — no choice in vehicle. We coordinate the Raikot jeep transfer as part of the rental. Beyond that, the trek to Fairy Meadows is on foot.
For Naltar village and lower sections: any vehicle works. For the upper Naltar Lakes (the famous three colored lakes): 4x4 required — Prado, 4Runner, or Jeep. The road from Naltar village to upper lakes is rough mountain track requiring serious off-road capability.
Getting to Gilgit
14-16 hours of driving, typically broken into 2 days. The route goes via Karakoram Highway through Hassan Abdal, Mansehra, Besham, Chilas, and finally Gilgit. Most travelers fly instead (1-hour direct flight). The drive is only recommended when flights are weather-cancelled or for travelers wanting the full Karakoram Highway experience.
Fly if possible. PIA and AirBlue operate direct 1-hour flights from Islamabad to Gilgit. Flights are weather-dependent and can be cancelled. If flights are cancelled, the 14-16 hour drive is the alternative. We recommend booking flights with a 1-2 day buffer in case of weather issues.
Approximately 1 hour direct. AirBlue and PIA operate daily flights. The flight passes through dramatic mountain valleys with views of Nanga Parbat (8,126m, world's 9th highest mountain). Sit on the right side flying to Gilgit, left side flying back, for the best mountain views.
Mountain flights can be cancelled due to weather. If your flight is cancelled, we offer two options: (1) free rescheduling to a later flight, or (2) road transfer from Islamabad to Gilgit via Karakoram Highway (14-16 hours, 2 days). We coordinate with airlines and don't charge extra for cancellation-related rescheduling.
Approximately 15-20 minutes (~7 km). Gilgit Airport sits south of the city center. The drive is along paved roads with views of the Indus and Gilgit rivers. Our driver meets you at arrivals and handles the transfer as part of your rental package.
Drive Times & Distances
Approximately 2-3 hours (~100 km) via the Karakoram Highway. The drive passes the Rakaposhi viewpoint (7,788m) and offers spectacular Karakoram mountain scenery. The road is paved throughout. Any vehicle handles it comfortably. Often done as a half-day transfer or with photography stops extending it to 4-5 hours.

Approximately 3-4 hours (~130 km) via the Karakoram Highway. Chilas is the main transit town between Gilgit and Islamabad. Most travelers pass through Chilas during the long Islamabad-Gilgit drive but don't typically stop there.
Approximately 8-10 hours (~300 km). Naran is in Kaghan Valley, a different mountain region. The drive goes via Babusar Pass (4,173m, open May-October). Most travelers don't combine Gilgit and Naran in one trip — they're typically separate destinations connected only when Babusar is open.
Approximately 3-4 hours (~120 km). Astore Valley sits at the foot of Nanga Parbat. 4x4 required due to mountain passes. Best as a 2-3 day extension. Famous for Rama Meadow, Rama Lake, and dramatic Nanga Parbat views.
Approximately 4-5 hours (~140 km). Rama Meadow is in Astore Valley with iconic Nanga Parbat views. The final approach involves rough mountain track requiring 4x4. Often done as overnight camp or as part of a 2-3 day Astore exploration.
Approximately 2.5 hours (~55 km). Naltar Valley sits at 2,900m northwest of Gilgit. The lower section road is reasonable, but the upper Naltar Lakes section requires 4x4. Famous for the three colored alpine lakes and Pakistan's premier ski resort.
Approximately 3 hours (~110 km). Hopper Glacier is in Nagar Valley — one of the world's largest valley glaciers. The route passes through Karimabad then branches off into Nagar. Some sections unpaved, 4x4 recommended.
Approximately 2 hours (~40 km). Bagrot Valley is just east of Gilgit — an off-the-beaten-path destination. 4x4 required due to unpaved sections. Famous for traditional Shina villages and a different angle view of Rakaposhi.
Approximately 5-6 hours (~170 km). Phander Valley is in Ghizer District west of Gilgit. Famous for Phander Lake (often called "Little Kashmir"). The drive crosses Gakuch and follows the Gilgit River. Some unpaved sections require 4x4.
Approximately 30 minutes (~10 km). The Kargah Buddha is a 7th-century rock-carved standing Buddha — one of the most important Buddhist heritage sites in Northern Pakistan. Easy half-day trip from Gilgit. Paved road throughout.
Approximately 4-5 hours (~160 km). The Hussaini Bridge is in Upper Hunza near Passu — one of the world's most dangerous suspension bridges, hanging over the Hunza River. Paved KKH road. Often combined with Passu Cones photography.
Approximately 3 hours (~110 km). Eagle's Nest viewpoint sits above Karimabad at 3,000m. From Karimabad, the final ascent involves a 30-minute steep mountain road. Views from Eagle's Nest include five 7,000m+ peaks: Rakaposhi, Diran, Golden Peak, Ladyfinger, and Ultar Sar.

Trip Costs & Planning
One-way transfer from Gilgit to Karimabad in a Prado costs approximately $50 (vehicle + driver) plus fuel ($20-30 for the 100km journey). Total: $70-80 for the transfer. Most travelers book a multi-day rental instead and use the same vehicle to explore Hunza after arrival — far better value.
2-day Prado rental for Khunjerab: $100 (vehicle + driver) + $80-100 fuel + $16 park entry (2 people) + driver meal/accommodation ($30) = approximately $230-250 total for up to 4 people. Per-person cost: $60 if 4 people share. Excellent value for the world's highest paved international border.
3-day Jeep rental for Fairy Meadows: $150 (vehicle + driver) + $40-50 fuel + Raikot Bridge jeep transfer ($25-40 per group) + porter fees if needed ($15-25/day) + Fairy Meadows accommodation ($25-50/night) = approximately $300-400 total for up to 4 people.

Absolutely — and we highly recommend it. The classic itinerary: 4-5 days in Gilgit / Hunza, transfer to Skardu (3 hours), 4-5 days in Skardu. Total trip: 8-12 days. This combines the two best regions of Northern Pakistan. Most clients book this combination.
