Want a Fuel-Inclusive Quote?
Prices shown above don't include fuel because fuel cost varies dramatically based on your itinerary — Deosai uses significantly more fuel than Skardu city tours, and our Land Cruiser V8 consumes more than the Corolla. We don't want to charge you for fuel you won't use.
If you'd prefer a single all-inclusive price for peace of mind, simply share your itinerary (destinations, total days, group size) and we'll send a complete fuel-inclusive quote within 2 hours.

Why Rent in Skardu
The Only Practical Way to Explore Baltistan
Here's what travel blogs don't tell you about Skardu: there is no Uber, no Careem (Pakistan's ride-share app doesn't operate in Baltistan), no functional public bus network, and no self-drive rental option. To explore Skardu and its spectacular surroundings — Deosai Plains, Shigar Valley, Khaplu, Hushe — you need to rent a vehicle with a driver. This isn't a tourism gimmick. It's the practical reality of traveling in one of Pakistan's most remote and most beautiful regions.
Five Reasons to Rent Rather Than Join a Package Tour
For flexible travelers, a private rental gives you everything a package tour offers — plus complete control over your schedule, often at lower cost.
Reach the "Land of Giants" at 4,114 Meters
Deosai National Park — the world's second-highest plateau and home to the endangered Himalayan brown bear — is only accessible by 4x4 vehicle. The drive takes 2-3 hours from Skardu over unpaved mountain tracks, with elevation gains that would defeat any sedan. Our Prado and Land Cruiser rentals are specifically tuned for this route. You'll cross Sheosar Lake (highest alpine lake in Pakistan at 4,142m), see wildflowers from June through August, and have a chance to spot brown bears, ibex, and the Himalayan marmot. Without a 4x4 rental with a Baltistan-experienced driver, Deosai is simply unreachable.
2.5 Hours East to Pakistan's Most Beautiful Palace
Khaplu Valley, home to the 19th-century Khaplu Palace (now a Serena heritage hotel) and the Chaqchan Mosque dating back to 1370, is a 2.5-hour drive east of Skardu along the Shyok River. The road follows dramatic gorges with views of K6, K7, and Masherbrum (7,821m). Public transport ends at Skardu town — beyond that, every meter of road is private vehicle territory. Our rentals handle the Khaplu route easily, and our drivers know the safest river crossings during seasonal flooding. Add Hushe Valley (the trailhead for K2 climbers) as a day extension from Khaplu.
1-Hour Cultural Excursion to 17th-Century Balti Heritage
Shigar Valley is a 1-hour drive north of Skardu and home to two of Pakistan's most significant cultural sites: Shigar Fort (built in the 17th century by Raja Hassan Khan, now a Serena heritage hotel), and the Amburiq Mosque, one of the oldest wooden mosques in South Asia (1430 CE). The valley also serves as the gateway to the Baltoro Glacier and K2 expeditions — every climber attempting K2 since 1902 has passed through Shigar. The road is paved but winding, and our rentals make the round trip comfortable. Most travelers spend a half-day here as part of a Skardu rental itinerary.
Set Your Own Pace, Your Own Route, Your Own Stops
Package tours run on rigid schedules. You arrive at sites when the bus does, you leave when the group does, you photograph what the guide shows you. A private rental flips this completely. Want to spend three extra hours at Sheosar Lake watching the light change? You can. Want to stop at a roadside Balti tea house for two hours of conversation with locals? You can. Want to skip a site that bores you to spend longer at one that fascinates you? You can. For travelers who value control over their experience, the math is simple: a 5-day Prado rental with driver ($400-500 total) often costs less than a group tour for two people while delivering a far better experience.
Balti Drivers Born and Raised in Baltistan
Our drivers aren't subcontracted from Lahore or Islamabad. They're Balti — born in Skardu, Shigar, or Khaplu — and have driven these roads since they were teenagers. They know which mountain pass is open this week, which restaurant has the best Balti meat momos, which viewpoint offers the best Masherbrum photograph at sunset, and which villages welcome unannounced visitors for tea. They speak Balti, Urdu, and English. They're effectively an informal cultural guide as well as a driver. International tourists consistently rate our drivers as the unexpected highlight of their Skardu trip.
The first time I drove a group from Skardu to Deosai, the American couple in the back had hired drivers across India, Nepal, and Bhutan over twenty years of travel. By the end of the day, they told me the road to Deosai was the most dramatic drive they'd ever taken, and the access to the plateau was something no package tour could have given them. That's why we rent the way we do — not because it's cheaper, but because it's better. The roads of Baltistan deserve to be driven, not toured.
— Karim Khan, Govt. Licensed Tour Operator
Destinations
Where Your Rental Can Take You
From 20-minute lake visits to multi-day mountain expeditions, your Skardu rental opens up the entire Baltistan region. Here are every major destination your vehicle can reach, with realistic drive times, distances, recommended vehicles, and what each route delivers.
Skardu City
Skardu city itself offers the K2 Museum (essential for understanding K2 expedition history and Balti porter culture), Skardu Bazaar for local shopping and traditional crafts, the Yadgar Chowk monument, and Skardu Airport for arrivals and departures. The Indus River runs along the edge of the city. A perfect day-one orientation drive for any rental.
Shangrila Resort & Lower Kachura Lake
The famous "Heaven on Earth" — Shangrila Resort sits on the shores of heart-shaped Lower Kachura Lake. Established in 1983, it's Pakistan's most photographed mountain resort. The resort has the famous "Fuselage Restaurant" built into a crashed airplane. Visitors can have lunch at the resort, walk around the lake, and photograph the iconic landscape. Paved road throughout.
Upper Kachura Lake
Upper Kachura is the photographer's lake — quieter than Lower Kachura, surrounded by apricot orchards, with crystal-clear water reflecting the Karakoram peaks. Best photographed in early morning light. The final approach involves a short unpaved section, which is why a 4x4 is recommended. Often combined with Lower Kachura as a single half-day trip.
Sadpara Lake
Sadpara Lake is Skardu's water supply and one of its most accessible alpine lakes — just 20 minutes from the city. The deep blue water sits against snow-capped peaks even in summer. Best photographed in afternoon light. The road is paved and any vehicle handles it comfortably. Excellent first-day acclimatization drive.
Deosai Plains
Deosai National Park — the "Land of Giants" — is the world's second-highest plateau at 4,114m. Home to the endangered Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan ibex, marmots, and over 124 bird species. Open only from June through September (snowbound rest of year). Wildflowers carpet the plains July-August. The drive involves serious unpaved mountain tracks — 4x4 is non-negotiable.
Sheosar Lake (within Deosai)
Sheosar Lake sits at 4,142m within Deosai National Park — the highest alpine lake in Pakistan. The setting is otherworldly: a deep blue lake reflecting Nanga Parbat (8,126m, the world's ninth highest peak) on clear days. Most travelers combine Deosai Plains and Sheosar Lake into a single full-day excursion. Pack lunch and layers — weather changes rapidly at this elevation.
Shigar Valley & Shigar Fort
Shigar Valley is the cultural heart of Baltistan. Visit the 17th-century Shigar Fort (built by Raja Hassan Khan, now a Serena heritage hotel), the Amburiq Mosque (1430 CE — one of South Asia's oldest wooden mosques), and the gateway to Baltoro Glacier and K2 expeditions. Every K2 climber since 1902 has passed through Shigar. Paved road throughout, suitable for any vehicle.
Khaplu Valley & Khaplu Palace
Khaplu Valley follows the Shyok River east of Skardu with dramatic views of K6, K7, and Masherbrum (7,821m). The 19th-century Khaplu Palace (now a Serena heritage hotel) and the Chaqchan Mosque (1370 CE) are essential cultural stops. Some sections involve unpaved road and river crossings during high-water season. Best visited as a 1-2 day trip with overnight stay at Khaplu Palace.
Hushe Valley
Hushe Valley is the trailhead for K2 Base Camp, Gondogoro La, and many other Karakoram trekking expeditions. The remote village sits at 3,050m surrounded by some of the world's most spectacular peaks: K6 (7,282m), K7 (6,934m), and Masherbrum (7,821m) directly overhead. The road becomes increasingly unpaved as you approach. Best for adventurous travelers — Jeep or hardcore 4x4 essential.
Basho Valley
Basho Valley is the off-the-beaten-path alternative — most international tourists never reach here. Lush green meadows, pine forests, glacial streams, and traditional Balti villages untouched by mass tourism. The route is rough 4x4 only, but the reward is solitude and a glimpse of pre-tourism Baltistan. Excellent for travelers seeking something different from the standard Skardu itinerary.
Skardu to Gilgit
Gilgit is the administrative capital of Gilgit-Baltistan and a gateway to Hunza Valley. The 3-hour drive from Skardu follows the dramatic Indus gorge with multiple photography stops. The Karakoram Highway is mostly paved throughout. Excellent option as a one-way transfer if you're flying out of Gilgit Airport or continuing onward to Hunza Valley.
Astore Valley
Astore Valley sits at the foot of Nanga Parbat (8,126m) — the world's ninth highest mountain. The valley is famous for Rama Meadow, the trout-filled Rama Lake, and the dramatic Burzil Pass. Astore is the lesser-known cousin to Hunza, but equally spectacular for travelers wanting to see Nanga Parbat up close. Some sections involve high-altitude mountain passes — 4x4 essential.
Skardu to Hunza
The legendary Skardu-to-Hunza road journey along the Karakoram Highway — one of the world's most spectacular drives. Passes through Gilgit, crosses the Indus River, and enters Hunza Valley with views of Rakaposhi (7,788m). The full day on the road is itself a destination. Multiple photography stops, including the confluence of the Indus and Gilgit rivers (meeting point of three great mountain ranges).
Skardu to Islamabad
Skardu to Islamabad by road is a 2-day journey via the Karakoram Highway through Gilgit, Chilas, and Besham. Most travelers fly between the two cities (1-hour flight), but the road journey itself is spectacular — passing Nanga Parbat viewpoint, the Indus gorge, and dramatic mountain landscapes. Recommended only when domestic flights are disrupted by weather, or for travelers wanting the full Karakoram Highway experience.

Plan My Skardu ItineraryWhy Driver-Included?
Every Rental Comes With a Professional Driver
This is the #1 question foreign tourists ask: "Can I rent without a driver?" The honest answer is no, and that's actually a good thing. Here's why driver-included rentals are the only practical and safest way to explore Baltistan.
The Direct Answer
Self-drive rentals are NOT available in Skardu or anywhere in Gilgit-Baltistan. This isn't a policy of our company specifically — it's a regional reality. No rental company in Skardu offers self-drive. The reasons are practical, safety-related, and ultimately to your benefit as a traveler.
Four Reasons Driver-Included Is Better
Beyond regulatory requirements, having a Balti driver fundamentally improves your Skardu experience.
Mountain Roads Require Local Knowledge
Skardu's roads include narrow mountain passes, river crossings, unpaved sections to Deosai, and single-lane bridges. Conditions change with weather, season, and recent landslides. Our drivers know which routes are open this week, which sections require careful navigation, and which detours save hours. International tourists driving these roads for the first time face real risks — even experienced drivers find Baltistan roads challenging.
GPS Doesn't Work Reliably in Valleys
Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze all have spotty coverage in Baltistan's deep mountain valleys. Cell signal is absent or weak in many areas. Roads change name (or have no name) frequently. Self-driving travelers regularly get lost, miss turnoffs, or end up on dangerous unmarked tracks. Our drivers have driven every road in Baltistan hundreds of times — they navigate by memory and landmark, not GPS.
Driver Acts as Informal Guide
Our drivers are Balti — born and raised in the region. They know which roadside dhaba (small restaurant) makes the best chapshuro, where to stop for the best Masherbrum photograph, which villages welcome unannounced visitors for tea, and the stories behind every major site. International tourists consistently rate this informal cultural guidance as the unexpected highlight of their trip. You're not just renting transportation; you're gaining a local fixer.
Insurance Complications for Foreign Drivers
Pakistani insurance policies for rental vehicles typically don't cover non-resident foreign drivers, especially in mountain regions. If anything goes wrong — a fender bender, a breakdown, an unfortunate incident — foreign self-drivers face significant liability and legal complications. With our drivers, all insurance and legal protections are fully in place. Your only responsibility as a passenger is to enjoy the journey.
Who Are Our Drivers?
Every driver we work with meets the following qualifications. We don't subcontract to outside companies — these are local Balti professionals we've worked with for years.
Government Licensed
Valid Pakistani commercial driving license, verified by Gilgit-Baltistan Transport Authority. We keep copies on file for every driver in our fleet.
Local Balti, Born & Raised
All our drivers were born and raised in Baltistan (Skardu, Shigar, Khaplu, or surrounding villages). They speak Balti, Urdu, and basic to fluent English.
English-Speaking on Request
If you specifically need an English-speaking driver (recommended for non-Urdu speakers), let us know during booking. We assign our most fluent drivers to international clients.
Minimum 5 Years Experience
Every driver on our roster has at least 5 years of professional driving experience in Baltistan. Many have 10+ years of experience including tour groups and expedition support.
Vehicle Mechanical Knowledge
Our drivers can perform basic mechanical fixes (changing tires, jump-starts, minor adjustments). For anything serious, our 24/7 support team dispatches a replacement vehicle or mechanic within 4-6 hours.
Cultural & Safety Briefed
All drivers complete cultural sensitivity training and safety protocols specific to international tourists. They know what foreign visitors need (rest stops, photo opportunities, etiquette guidance).
Driver Working Hours & Etiquette
Drivers work approximately 8-10 hours per day including driving time, rest stops, and waiting at sites. Extended days (15+ hours) require driver consent and may include overtime charges.
Drivers take rest stops every 2-3 hours of driving for safety reasons. These naturally align with photography stops, meal breaks, and viewpoint visits — meaning rest stops benefit your itinerary, not just the driver.
Driver meals outside Skardu are your responsibility (approximately PKR 1,500-2,500 / $5-8 USD per day). Inside Skardu, drivers handle their own meals. Many travelers eat together with their driver — it's a great way to learn about Balti culture.
Tipping is optional but appreciated for excellent service. Standard tip range is PKR 1,500-3,000 ($5-10 USD) per day for good service, paid in cash at the end of the trip. For multi-day excellent service, travelers often tip PKR 5,000-10,000 ($15-35 USD) total.

Customer Reviews
What Our Renters Say
Real feedback from international travelers who've rented our vehicles. Specific dates, specific trips, specific stories. We don't post anonymous reviews — every testimonial is from a real customer who agreed to be quoted.
"We rented a Prado for 5 days in October 2024 to drive from Skardu to Deosai and Khaplu. Our driver Mr. Ali was incredible — he knew every shortcut, the best photography spots, and where to find authentic Balti food. The vehicle was clean and well-maintained. Total cost including fuel was about $400 less than what we'd pay for a similar package tour. Highly recommended."
"As a solo female traveler, I was nervous about renting a vehicle in Pakistan. The Vacation Project's team made it stress-free. My driver was professional, respectful, and turned out to be an excellent informal guide. We did Skardu, Shigar, and Khaplu over 4 days in a 4Runner. The vehicle was perfect for the mountain roads. Will definitely book again for my next Pakistan trip."
"Our group of 8 needed a Hiace for a week to cover Skardu, Hunza, and back. The booking process was simple — we sent our itinerary via WhatsApp and got a quote within 2 hours. The driver was patient with our many photo stops, and the vehicle handled the long drives well. No hidden costs, no surprises. Exactly as quoted."
"Booked a Jeep for the Hushe Valley trip to start our K2 Base Camp trek. The 4x4 capability was essential — there's no way a regular vehicle could have handled those mountain tracks. Our driver was a local from Khaplu and his knowledge of the K2 trek logistics was invaluable. The Vacation Project handled all permits and pre-trek arrangements professionally."
